Garbage & Recycling

The Village of Heyworth contracts its garbage and recycling services with AREA Disposal.  Please put your trash and recycling out the night before pickup. Three (3) totes are provided for each customer, which can be any combination of garbage or recycling.  Additional totes can be obtained for an additional $4.50 per month per tote.

Residential Pick-up

Residential refuse is picked up on Wednesday each week except when the following holidays fall on Monday thru Wednesday, in which case pickup day will be on Thursday:

  • New Years Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Fourth of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

Commercial Pick-up

Commercial refuse pickup will always be on Monday and/or Thursday except when the previous holidays fall on Monday thru Thursday when refuse will be picked up Tuesday and/or Friday respectively. Please check with AREA for your schedule or any delays.


Garbage & Refuse

Refuse is defined as:

  • Garbage
  • Rubbish
  • Glass items
  • Bulk items, ex. Couches, stuffed chairs
  • White goods, ex. Washers & dryers, water heaters, gas & electric stoves

Refuse does not include:

  • Concrete
  • Yard wastes including grass
  • Refrigerators/freezers
  • Building materials
  • Large automotive parts
  • Hazardous wastes
  • Items not accepted by the state approved transfer station/landfill

White Goods

Most white goods can be picked up with your garbage.  Set your white goods at the curb for pickup on garbage collection days.  White goods include: washers, dryers, water heaters, gas & electric stoves.  

Recycling

Recycle is picked up every other week on Friday, unless there is a holiday.  The following items are collected with recycling: 

  • Plastics #1 through #7 (except #6 - Styrofoam)
  • Cardboard broken down and no larger than 2 ft. x 2 ft., bundled or contained
  • Newspapers, catalogs, phone books, magazines and junk mail
  • Steel, aluminum and bi-metal cans
  • NO GLASS PRODUCTS - place glass products in the trash

Electronic Goods Recycling 

Electronic Recycling drop-off, for Village residents only, is the second Friday of each month from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. behind the Heyworth Village Hall.  You may drop off items on the east side of the building between those hours.  A photo I.D. showing your Heyworth address may be required to be shown at drop-off.  For more information about electronic goods recycling, click here.


Hazardous Waste Disposal

Some items may not be disposed of with normal garbage and recycling.  Some of the these are referred to as hazardous waste.  Typical hazardous waste includes chemicals, paints, batteries, light bulbs, ink cartridges, and pharmaceuticals.  To find out more about hazardous waste items and disposal, click here
